Psychic Barbara Meiklejohnfree, 49, had a near-death experience while in intensive care. She lives with her husband David, 46, in Buxton, Derbyshire.

In December 2005, I was rushed into hospital with peritonitis, which is an extremely painful, serious inflammation of the gut. And it was while in intensive care that I had my near-death experience.

I was slipping in and out of consciousness and the last thing I recall is falling towards a bright light which turned into a tunnel. It felt as if I was in Star Trek, travelling at Warp Factor 10.

I ended up in a white room, which felt like a waiting room, with a huge TV screen showing my life.

All the things that had ever happened to me, from my childhood until that moment, flashed up on the screen like a film on fast forward. I then felt a presence.

I couldn't see anyone but I heard a voice, which said: 'You have been brought to this place to be healed because you still have important work to do on Earth. This is where souls come after what you call "death", before passing on to your next life.' The next thing I knew, I was in a hospital theatre and my body was being rebuilt by many spiritual beings. The heavenly doctors looked like humans but they had a glow about them.

Soon, I didn't feel ill any more and I was told I was cleaned of all the poisons and painful emotions that had been in my body.

After they had finished, I found myself in the first room again with the TV screen. But now I was shown my future. I was going to write a successful book about spirituality and spread the word about life after death.

I asked the being if I was dead and he replied: 'No, you were brought here to be healed and returned with a new body.' I didn't want to go back but knew I had to and with the thought, 'I'm ready,' I found myself back in the hospital bed.

It was the middle of the night and I felt so light, so clean, as if I had just been in a spiritual car wash. I was better and back home within a week.

I've always trusted in the spirit world - I've seen spirits since I was three years old - and as a working medium my experience has enhanced what I already believe - that there is life after death and a higher force watching over us. The experience also nudged me into writing my book, which is coming out later this year. I would have written it eventually but being told it was my next task certainly spurred me on.
